Hedge Trimming Services Across the North Shore
Regular Hedge Trimming
We trim boundary and garden hedges on a regular cycle for owners who want the same height and line held every season. Fast growers such as privet and griselinia usually need two or three cuts a year to stay tight.
A hedge on a regular cycle takes less time per visit, with less growth to cut and less green waste to take away. Tell us the height you want it held at.
Overgrown Hedge Reduction
Overgrown hedges left for a few years are where our reduction work comes in, cutting height and width back in stages. Hard cutting a conifer hedge into bare wood can leave brown patches that never regrow, so how far each species will take is judged before the first cut.
Expect a thinner-looking hedge for a season before it fills in. Ask at the site visit whether your reduction can be done in one go.
Tall Hedge Trimming
Tall hedges over 3 metres are the ones we cut from height with proper access gear, because the top of a long screen is where ladder falls happen. Wind-break hedges on the exposed coastal sections of the Bays often reach this size.
Access for the gear matters, so tell us if the hedge runs along a narrow side path or a steep bank.
Hedge Removal
Taking a whole hedge out is a different job from trimming one, and our quote covers cutting, chipping, carting and the stumps. Most owners replacing a hedge with a fence want the roots gone too, so the stumps along the line are ground once the hedge is down.
On a shared boundary, the neighbour's agreement comes first. We ask for it in writing before removal starts.
Hedges Under Power Lines
Hedges growing up into the overhead line to the house are cut by our powerline-approved staff. Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, the growth limit zone around a 230 or 400 volt line is 0.5 metres.
If the lines company has sent you a cut or trim notice, keep it and show it to us at the site visit.
How Hedge Trimming Works on the North Shore
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Step 1. Free site visit | We measure the hedge, check overhead lines and access, and agree which faces get cut and how far down. |
| Step 2. Written quote | A price for the job, with clippings removal and the faces being cut written in. |
| Step 3. Neighbour and lines check | Where the far side or an overhead line is involved, the neighbour's agreement and line clearances are sorted first. |
| Step 4. Trimming or removal | Hand shears for shaping, hedge trimmers and access gear for height, and a chainsaw for removal. |
| Step 5. Clean-up | Clippings are raked and blown off paths and lawns, and every load leaves with us. |

Hedge Trimming Prices on the North Shore
| Job | Price guide (excl. GST) |
|---|---|
| Low hedge under 1.5 m, up to about 15 m long | $130 to $300 |
| Boundary hedge 1.5 to 3 m, up to about 25 m long | $260 to $600 |
| Tall or long hedge over 3 m | $600 to $1,750 plus |
| Overgrown hedge reduction | $350 to $1,300 plus |
| Full hedge removal | Quoted by length, height and stumps |
Figures exclude GST and are an indication until the hedge has been measured. Green waste removal is part of every price. Short hedges sit at the top of their band because the trip and clean-up take the same time whatever the length. The written quote after the site visit is the figure you pay.
What Moves the Price of a Hedge Trim
- Height, with anything above about 3 m needing access gear
- Length of the run
- How long since the last cut
- How many faces are trimmed, including the top and the neighbour's side
- Access to the far side and around obstacles
- Volume of green waste to chip and take away

Hedges, Boundaries and Power Lines on the North Shore
Most hedge work on the North Shore is straightforward, but three local situations change how a job is planned, and they come up often enough for our tree services across the North Shore to check for them on every visit before quoting.
The first is the overhead line. Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, the lines company issues a cut or trim notice when a tree or hedge grows into the growth limit zone, and the owner then has to have it cut. The owner must give the lines company three working days' notice before cutting, and the lines company pays for the first cut or trim. We work to that sequence, so the notice period and the cost question are settled before we arrive. Show us the notice if you have one.
The second is the coast. Along the clifftop sections of Torbay, Mairangi Bay and Castor Bay, removing more than 25 square metres of contiguous vegetation, or a native tree over 3 metres, within 20 metres of mean high water springs is a restricted discretionary activity under rule E15 of the Auckland Unitary Plan. A long coastal hedge coming out is checked against that rule before we quote removal.
The third is bush. The Kaipātiki local board area holds 77 Significant Ecological Area features in a small footprint, across a board area that takes in Birkenhead, Beach Haven and Glenfield. Inside an ecological area the permitted trimming limit is branches up to 50 mm and no more than 10 percent of live growth a year, keeping the natural shape. A native hedge on that boundary is cut inside those limits, or you hear from us first if it needs more. A hedge backing onto reserve bush in Beach Haven or Birkenhead is planned around the boundary line with the reserve before any cut is made.
