Bamboo Removal Services on the North Shore
Running Bamboo Removal
Running bamboo is what people usually call us about once it has started to spread, and the canes are the easy part. Everything is cut to the ground, then the rhizome network is dug out, following each runner to its end.
Running types only send up shoots in spring, so that season shows whether anything was missed. Tell us if you have seen shoots well away from the main patch.
Bamboo Spreading From a Neighbour's Property
Bamboo coming under the fence from next door is a job we scope with both sides of the boundary in mind. Auckland Council can only enforce removal where bamboo breaches the pest plan, so most boundary cases get sorted between neighbours.
We can clear the runners on your side, and quote the neighbour's side as well if they agree.
Clumping Bamboo Removal
Clumping bamboo stays where it was planted, and our crew takes it out when the clump has simply grown too big for the space. The canes are cut down, the root ball is dug or ground out, and the hole is backfilled ready for planting.
Many clumpers are fine to keep and thin. If you are unsure which type you have, a photo of the base of the canes tells us.
Large Bamboo Stands and Boundary Screens
Big established stands, often old black or golden bamboo screens along a boundary, can take our team more than one day, with the canes chipped and the rhizome mass dug out in sections. Black and golden bamboo are flowering worldwide at the moment, and Auckland Council reports many groves thinning as a result.
A weakened stand is a good time to get the rhizomes out.
Bamboo Near Fences, Paths and Drains
Our team digs by hand where rhizomes have run under a fence line, path or driveway, since a machine there would do more harm than the bamboo. Large running species can push through fences, paths and underground services.
If you know where your drains run, mark them before the visit. Where a runner goes too far under paving to reach, we show you where it is.
Cane Cutting and Bamboo Thinning
Thinning is the option our arborists suggest for a clumping screen you want to keep, taking out old and dead canes so the rest stay upright and tidy.
Cutting a running patch to the ground without digging only buys time, because the rhizomes stay alive underneath. It suits a patch that is waiting on a full removal later.
How a North Shore Bamboo Removal Job Runs
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Step 1. Free site visit | We find the edges of the patch, probe for runners, and confirm whether the bamboo is running or clumping. |
| Step 2. Written quote | You get a price based on the area of rhizome to dig, the volume of cane and the access. |
| Step 3. Cane cutting | Canes are cut to ground level, then chipped or bundled for removal. |
| Step 4. Rhizome dig-out | The rhizome mat is dug out and lifted, following each runner to where it ends. |
| Step 5. Removal and spring watch | Rhizomes and roots leave site with us, the ground is levelled, and we tell you what to look for when spring shoots appear. |

Bamboo Removal Prices on the North Shore
| Job | Price guide (excl. GST) |
|---|---|
| Clumping bamboo, single clump | $400 to $900 |
| Running bamboo, small patch up to about 10 m² | $800 to $2,000 |
| Running bamboo, large stand or boundary spread | $2,000 to $5,000, or quoted |
| Cane cutting or thinning only, no digging | $300 to $700 |
Prices are GST exclusive and are a guide until the patch has been probed. How far the runners go is the biggest unknown, which is why the price is fixed after the site visit. Removal of canes, rhizomes and roots is included in every band. Small patches sit at the top of their band because the setup costs the same as for a larger one.
What Moves the Price of Bamboo Removal
- How far the rhizomes have spread from the visible canes
- Running or clumping bamboo
- Depth and density of the rhizome mat
- Runners under paving, decks or a fence line
- Access for the trailer and the carry distance
- Volume of cane and rhizome to take away
Bamboo and Auckland's Pest Plant Rules
Auckland has banned six running bamboo species under its Regional Pest Management Plan. Auckland Council's bamboo pest listing names golden bamboo, black bamboo and arrow bamboo along with Pleioblastus viridistriatus, Pseudosasa hindsii and Chimonobambusa quadrangularis, all at sustained control status. Since 1 September 2021 none of them can be sold, bred or newly planted in the region, though an existing plant can be moved within the same property.
Council can only enforce removal where bamboo breaches the pest plan, and its own advisors say neighbour disputes over spreading bamboo are common because the plant creeps across boundaries underground. Large running species can push through fences, paths and underground services on the way.
Disposal matters as much as the dig. Council lists rhizomes and roots as the parts that need disposal, and dumped garden waste is one of the ways bamboo reaches new sites. As a North Shore arborist company, we take every rhizome away with the canes so none of it ends up in a green waste heap. Any runner that was missed will show itself in spring, the only season running types shoot.
