Tree Pruning and Trimming Services on the North Shore
Tree Trimming for Light, Views and Clearance
We trim trees back from roofs, gutters, windows and driveways once a canopy has grown into the house or taken the light. Each cut goes back to a branch collar or a side branch, so the tree can close the wound and keep its shape.
Tell us what you want cleared and by how much. A roofline and a sea view need different cuts.
Crown Reduction on Large Trees
Crown reduction is the job our arborists book for big oaks, gums and pohutukawa that have outgrown the section but are worth keeping. Limbs are shortened to strong growth points right around the canopy, so the tree comes in without looking lopped.
On a scheduled Notable Tree the amount allowed without consent is small. At the site visit we tell you how far yours can go this year.
Crown Thinning and Lifting
Thinning and lifting are what our team suggests when a tree feels heavy or the lawn under it has gone to moss. Thinning removes crossing and crowded branches so light and wind pass through. Lifting takes off the lowest limbs to clear paths, cars and the mower.
Neither changes the height of the tree. If height is the problem, ask about a reduction.
Deadwooding and Storm-Damage Pruning
Dead and split branches are the first to fall in a storm, and taking them out is the safety prune we recommend before anything else. Under the Notable Trees rules a qualified arborist can remove dead wood even from a scheduled tree.
After a storm, broken limbs are cut back to sound wood so the tear does not run further down the trunk.
Fruit Tree and Small Tree Pruning
Feijoas, citrus, plums and ornamental maples get a lighter cut from us, so you keep next season's fruit and flowers. Small trees are a short job and are often booked alongside bigger pruning on the same section.
Tell us the species if you know it. Stone fruit are best pruned in a dry spell.
Pruning Near Power Lines
Branches near the service line or street lines are cut by our powerline-approved staff. Vector, the lines company on the North Shore, sends a cut or trim notice when a tree reaches the growth limit zone around its lines. The tree then has to be cut back to the notice zone, one metre beyond it.
If you have received a notice, send a photo of it with your enquiry.
How a North Shore Tree Pruning Job Runs
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Step 1. Free site visit | We look at the tree, what you want from the prune, the access, and any roof, lines or glasshouse underneath. |
| Step 2. Overlay check | Your address is checked against the Notable Tree and ecological overlays, and we tell you what they allow. |
| Step 3. Written quote | You get a price with the type of prune, roughly how much comes off, and the clean-up written in. |
| Step 4. Pruning | Our arborists climb the tree, cut to growth points, and lower heavy limbs on ropes over roofs and gardens. |
| Step 5. Chipping and clean-up | Every branch goes through our chipper and leaves with us, and paths and lawns are blown clear. |

Tree Pruning Prices on the North Shore
| Job | Price guide (excl. GST) |
|---|---|
| Small tree or fruit tree, under 5 m | $250 to $450 |
| Medium tree, 5 to 10 m | $450 to $900 |
| Large tree over 10 m, climbed and rigged | $900 to $2,000 |
| Crown reduction on a large tree | $1,200 to $2,800, or quoted |
| Each extra small tree on the same visit | From $120 |
Prices exclude GST and are a guide until we have seen the tree. Every price includes chipping the branches and taking the chip away. Small jobs land at the upper end of each band, because getting the crew and chipper to site costs the same however little comes off. We confirm the figure in writing after the site visit.
What Moves the Price of Tree Pruning
- Height and canopy spread, the biggest single factor
- How much comes off, from a light deadwood to a full reduction
- Access for the chipper, since a long carry from the back garden adds time
- What sits under the canopy, such as a roof, glasshouse or power line
- Rope rigging to lower limbs where nothing can be dropped
- Overlay limits on a scheduled tree, which can split the work over more than one year
Notable Trees and Pruning Rules on the North Shore
A tree on a North Shore section is protected because of where it sits or how it is listed, and never just for its size or species. A Unitary Plan overlay, an old consent condition or a covenant on the title is what creates the protection. As a tree care company on the North Shore, we check all three at the site visit.
Notable Trees are the overlay that changes a pruning job most. The Devonport-Takapuna and Kaipatiki local board areas hold more than 400 scheduled entries between them, and over 180 of those include a pohutukawa. Under Standard D13.6.1 of the Auckland Unitary Plan, trimming a scheduled tree is permitted only where no branch over 50 mm across is cut, no more than 10 per cent of live growth comes off in a calendar year, and the tree keeps its natural shape. A prune beyond those limits is a restricted discretionary activity and needs resource consent first.
The 10 per cent cap is why a big reduction on a scheduled tree is sometimes staged over two or three years. Dead wood is handled differently. The same chapter lists dead wood removal by a qualified arborist as a permitted activity, which covers most storm-safety pruning on listed trees.
